Tutor time reading.

The books chosen for the new tutor time reading programme have the key aim to encourage students to engage with reading and enjoy the experience.  Underlying this there is a clear rationale to support the character education ethos and embed the new core values.

The rationale is as follows:

  • Regular reading is habit forming, engaging students with regular reading with encourage them to do this independently.

  • Having tutors as reading champions to model how a story should be read will demonstrate how reading can be enjoyable.

  • Providing an opportunity to discuss what is being read will show that reading can be a collaborative experience.

  • The texts all link to the new core values of empathy, courage and determination.  Tutors will have an opportunity to explore these through the texts through discussion.

  • The texts have been chosen to widen and challenge student’s experiences in terms of cultural capital, vocabulary, genre and concepts.
